ASC Machine Tools Inc., a longtime Spokane Valley-based manufacturer, so far is having its best year in a decade, says co-owner and President Ray McGriff.

ASC primarily manufactures equipment that handles aluminum and steel coils, or big rolls of metal in sheet form, that are used by the can and metal building industries.

The last time both of its divisions enjoyed strong growth at the same time was in the mid-90s, McGriff says.

ASC projects revenue of $25 million this year.

The company occupies a 120,000-square-foot complex, most of which it uses for manufacturing.

ASC claims to be of the one top makers of machines for the can-making industry in the world, and one of the top domestic producers of equipment that’s used to make components for metal buildings.

“We’ve got our little niche market, and we’re continuing to bang away,” says Don Cornell, co-owner and executive vice president.

“The last part of last year orders picked up, and so far this year, our order intake has been good.”

Cornell says the company has absorbed some of the steel price increases, which have jumped between 25 percent and 250 percent, and has passed on the rest to its customers.

“The business has changed since we sold the corrugated box operations, and we’re more engineering intensive,” Cornell says.

Oxford High faces $2.5m cost overruns

Rapid increases in the price of steel, asphalt and plastics mean the high school project is running millions of dollars over budget again. The higher costs for construction materials means an additional $2.5 million is needed for the project as planned, the High School Building Committee was told this week by Brian Holmes of O&G Industries, the $44 million project’s construction manager. It also means that the total price for optional features is $3.3 million, Holmes told the committee members.

The project must once again be trimmed. The original plan came in millions over budget and was trimmed last year to fit the ceiling approved by voters. “When folks put together the costs last year, they had no idea steel would go through the roof and petroleum products would go through the roof. It’s no one’s fault,” said Frank Samuelson, who will be the high school’s principal. The construction schedule is running tight but still on track for a September 2010 opening, said Edwin Hellauer, chairman of the building committee. Hellauer this week requested that Holmes revise the project with a number of reductions in time for a committee meeting next Monday at 7 p.m. at Quaker Farms School.

The cutbacks include downsizing the auditorium from 600 to 375 seats, moving instrumental and choral rooms to the present stage area, making a driver’s education lab an optional feature, retaining air-conditioning just in administration areas, some classrooms, media center, auditorium, and cafeteria, and making football bleachers a possible alternate. Hellauer said the committee must pass a resolution on the reductions and get Board of Education approval for them.

Schools Supt. Judith Palmer and other school district officials could not be reached for comment Wednesday. The exact costs won’t be known until the bids come in later this year, according to Samuelson. “I’m hopeful when the bids come in some things that may be alternates will be included,” Samuelson said.

Construction should begin this fall. Voters approved a 145,000-square-foot academic space with a 10,000-square-foot swimming pool complex. A total of $43.9 million is budgeted for the school project.

Looks like China is predicting that their steel market won’t grow as quickly in 2008 as it did in 2007. If I remember my high school economics correctly, that may cause the prices to decline. Demand down = prices down? We’ll see if it’s true or not.
